A Typical American Family Drama

Ellis (Tye Sheridan) lives with his parents in a houseboat. Ellis father is a fisherman. Neckbone (Jacob Lofland) lives with his uncle, Galen (Michael Shannon) an oyster diver. They are a good friends in Arkansas. They were 14 years old. When they had an adventure with a boat and arrived on a deserted island, they find a boat that is stuck in a tree. They consider it, as their own. They also do not tell it to anyone. When visiting their boat for a second time, they meet a mysterious man with a gun. He is Mud (Matthew McConaughey), who lives alone on the island and the owner that boat.

Ellis and Neckbone try to defend that boat from Mud. Mud offered an agreement to Ellis and Neckbone. Mud will not live on the island forever. He was waiting for a beautiful blond woman with a tattoo on his hand, Juniper (Reese Whiterspoon). Juniper is Mud lover. When the time comes, Mud will leave the island and give the boat to them. But it is not free, Mud asked them to bring foods for him. Ellis and Neckbone approve that and stole foods at home to Mud.
When Ellis and Neckbone was going to town and got a fight with seniors, they saw a woman who has similar characteristic with Juniper. The woman was staying in a motel in town.

The story then switched into Ellis family problems. Ellis father said a sad news to Ellis. They will get divorced. Ellis mother want to live in town and took Ellis with her. Ellis was very sad to hear that. In the evening, he brought foods and went to Mud alone. He also told to Mud, that he had seen Juniper in a motel.
On the next day, when Ellis was going to somewhere with his mother, their car was stopped by police. They were looking for a criminal. They show Mud picture on a criminal poster. But, Ellis admitted that he did not know about Mud to them. Ellis and Neckbone went to Mud for an explaination.
In fact, Mud was hiding because of a murder. He killed a man, who had been hurt Juniper. Mud becomes a most wanted criminal. The victim's family hired a hitman to catch Mud. After knowing from Ellis that the police have started looking for him, he decided to leave the island as soon as possible. Mud takes his boat to escape. He changed the agreement that was made first with Ellis and Neckbone. Mud will not give his boat but his gun to Neckbone, if they willing to help him get out from the island. But, the decisions taken by Mud for involving Ellis and Neckbone, can make them in a dangerous position.
Mud is one example of a typical American family drama, which is very rarely found now. I liked it, although it was not included in my favorites list. Mud shows the problems are usually faced by teenagers and the family. Quarrels in family, divorce, a friendship and love of teenagers will be found in Mud. It's very simple movie, easy to understand and cliche.
But something that makes Mud more interesting are Ellis and Neckbone character and the story between Ellis, Neckbone and Mud. Ellis and Neckbone could say represent the 14 years olds, that will soon go to their teens. They tends to have a high levels emotion, brave, has a strong principle, love peace, respect to loyalty, trust in love but they are also very fragile. The bitter sweet of life can not be denied has formed the character and mindset to look something. Ellis lives in an intact family, brave and always has a positive think, while Neckbone never felt the love of parents, brave, adventurous, always be cautious with strangers, irreverent, and has a mind beyond his age. Everything in Mud looks naturals and logic.
The story between Mud, Ellis and Neckbone, with the differences age, makes Mud as an interesting show. We can see how Neckbone always suspicious Mud. Unlike Ellis who always sincerely believe Mud. Mud is a selfish figure. He just give priorty on his safety, but in the end, he had to admit that Ellis and Neckbone are the only friends during his escape. It's very touching. When getting closer to the end of the film, Mud increasingly fascinating. I love this movie. What about you?
