A Christmas Carol (2009)

Less Suited for Kids, Not Bad for Adults. A Very Good 3D Animation

Ho...Ho..Ho...Merry Christmas!!! May peace and love of Christmas always in our midst. Yeah, we passed Christmas day a few days ago, a day full of blessing for all Christians. This time, I will give review a movie that is still related with Christmas, A Christmas Carol. The film which is based on a novel by Charles Dickens, told about the story of an old man named Scrooge or Ebenezer (Jim Carrey). He is very rich but stingy. When his best friend and co-workers, Jacob Marley (Gary Oldman) died, Scrooge took back the coin which is used to cover Marley's eyes. Scrooge never celebrated Christmas. He hated all the things related to Christmas. All the people around him already knew the character of Scrooge.

Scrooge always opened his office as usual on Christmas Eve. He did not allow the employee to go home earlier for Christmas celebration. He also never attended a Christmas dinner, even though the invitation had come from his own nephew. Scrooge always refused all Christmas donations.

After 7 times of Christmas Eve, right on the day when Marley died 7 years ago, Marley ghost haunted Scrooge. Marley ghost came with the chains wrapped around his body. Marley ghost felt miserable because of chains. Scrooge was very scared when saw it. Marley ghost tried to remind Scrooge to do a lot of good deeds when Scrooge was still alive. The chains are reward of Marley greedy attitude and prioritized the money than everything when he was alive. Marley did not want if Scrooge will get the same thing like him when he died later.

Marley ghost told Scrooge, there would be three ghost haunted Scrooge. They would come at 1 am on the next day, the same time on the next night and the last one on the following night, at 12 o'clock. The ghosts would bring Scrooge into some places in order to see what has happened in the past and what will happen in the future. They would try to make Scrooge attitude changed and looked Christmas better than before.

In fact, there are other Christmas movies which much more interesting to me than A Christmas Carol, but the name of Robert Zemeckis, as director, is the reason to choose this movie. Some Zemeckis film also was a good film, such as the trilogy of Back to the Future (I, II, III), Forrest Gump and Cast Away. There is no something special in A Christmas Carol, but it also did not disappointing. As one of the Christmas-themed animated movie, A Christmas Carol has a heavy story and less suited for kids. The message of this film is actually very good, that is sharing what we have for those in need, but the depiction is too frontal and scary for the kids. There are ghosts, death and punishment afterlife. Although included in comedy movie, I can not feel the comedy. So this movie is more suited for adults. That's my opinion, how about yours?

The excellence of A Christmas Carol is on the animation side. 3D animation and visual effects are very good, very similar to relity. A Christmas Carol was the first Disney Animated film released in IMAX 3D.
