The Beach (2000) on IMDb
In a few days, there are a lot of things to be done which caused reduces my time to watch movie. This blog became a little choked up in issued a new post. But I still need the movie to refreshing, so I keep trying to steal a little time to watch a movie, at least one title for two days. Thanks to my friends who always give supports, advice and references good movie for me. Really, it is a shot of spirit for me in the middle of all my troubles to continue this blog. Now, I will review another Leonardo DiCaprio movie. For those of you who are not fans of DiCaprio, hopefully not to be bored with DiCaprio movie review ^_*
I was planning to review all DiCaprio movie, but of course not in a sequence. I would intersperse it with other films. The Beach tells about the experiences of a young man named Richard (DiCaprio) who loves backpacking (long distances travelling with low cost and the easy carry items).

Richard was travelling alone to Thailand. He met a crazy man, called Daffy in motel. Daffy told about a secret island to Richard. The island is very beautiful and surrounded by beach. Daffy convince Richard that the island was really exist and he had to visit the island. On the next day, Daffy was found dead of suicide in his bedroom. Before he died, he had left the island map for Richard.

Richard told about the island to the two lovers, Etienne (Guillaume Canet) and Francoise (Virginie Ledoyen). Richard was interested to Francoise since they first met in motel, so he invites them to go to find the island by following the directions from map. They begin the journey by train, ship, truck and arrived in Koh Samui.

Because of rain, they decided to stay overnight. Richard spent the night with a group of surfers. They talked about the secret island with a beautiful beach and vast marijuana plantations. On the next day, Richard made a copy of map and put it in front of their doors when they sleep.

Richard, Etienne and Francoise cotinued the journey by boat and arrived at island. They have to swim to get to the secret island. On secret island, they found marijuana plantation guarded by armed locals. They should be able to pass through the plantation, to get to the beach they want to go. Could they pass the plantation? What will they meet on the beach? Is it true that the life on the beach is like in heaven?

Nothing special, that's two words that can describe this movie overall. The story idea is actually unique, about an island that always concealed. But the unique idea is not supported with a good storyline, too forced, ridiculous and illogical. How could an island with so many people, concealed and presented in the film that takes setting time in the modern era when video games are booming. When the movie is almost over, the story became getting weird, the resolution also perfunctory and too easy.

I am so sorry, if I have to say honestly that The Beach is the most disappointing movie of DiCaprio. It is very pity because DiCaprio's ability which always good, is not supported by the story and his clarity of the characters in The Beach. The presence of DiCapriois not enough to make this movie as one movie which should not be missed, even by fans of DiCaprio, like me. I am to be reminded that movie is a work of art which has many aspects effecting. It is not enough depends on the players act or just an interesting story. All is a unity that determies is a film successful or not. That's my opinion, what about you?
