Horror Movie with a bit of Ghost Sightings

Ellison Oswalt (Ethan Hawke) is a famous author of crime novels. One of his best-selling novels is fiction story, Kentucky Blood. Oswalt wants repeat the successful of Kentucky Blood. He wanted to write a true story of a murder that has made one family dead hanging under the tree. But, Stephanie coud not be found and declared lost. This time, Oswalt worked very seriously. He invites Tracy (Juliet Rylance) and their children, Trevor (Michael Hall D'Addario) and Ashley (Clare Foley) to stay at the house where the murder happened. But, Oswalt did not tell anything about history of the house to his family.

When heading upstairs to clean up the goods, Oswalt found a box of film, contained five tape's recording that already titled. Oswalt bring it into the office and play one of them, Family Hanging Out 2011.

The tape was a regular recording a family event held in the garden behind the house. Stephanie is also seen in the film. It seems it is a Stephanie's video family. They make it before the murder happened. Oswalt see the film until the end and shocked when he saw the murder captured on film. The whole family dead, but Stephanie disappeared.
Where is Stephanie? Who has made the tape recording? Who was killed this family? Many questions appeared in the minds of Oswalt. But he did not tell Tracy about the tape. He did not want to make his family worry and fear so that can disturb his plans to write a novel.
Oswalt continue to watch all the tape. In fact, all of them contained a sadistic murders recording. In every location, there is a symbol that has been left by the killer, and in a one of them, recorded a very scary face.

Unconsciously, Oswalt has spent several bottles of whiskey to overcome his fear after seeing all the video. Tracy began to feel worried seeing the condition of her husband. Oswalt often see the strange things, including Travor and Ashley.
With the help of a policeman and paranormal, Oswalt has finally learned what he was facing. A series of murder was not an ordinary murder. The murders took place in sequence and follow a certain pattern. They are in a very dangerous position. Unfortunately, it was too late. Oswalt had to admit that his decision to take his family lived in that house was a big mistake.

Sinister has an interesting story idea. This movie is not only a story about a haunted house. There is a mystery of the murder are interesting enough to follow and can make me curious, though quite strange and confusing at first. Especially when guessing Oswalt linkages with the murders. Oswalt role in the story, the explaination of the murder, and who is the real killer was revealed when the film almost over.
Unfortunately, the film is arguably very stingy in showing ghosts. So in the early parts of the film, feels boring. Ghostly figure emerged after the film runs nearly 60 minutes and was not too creepy. Actually, from the beginning, Sinister has invited me to enjoy the horrors by tape recording and dark atmosphere in the house, but it's still not enough for me. It's not complete if do not see the direct interaction between the characters with ghosts. My mother who watch Sinister even fall asleep after 40 minutes the movie goes.
Ethan Hawke has not given the best performances in this film. But it can still to be understood, because horror movie doesn't have much dialogue that can explore the acting skills of the players.
Besides the scary things that characterize the horror movie, Sinister is still showing drama in the family scene. The disagreement between Oswalt and Tracy about a good residence for their children, give another atmosphere in this film.
